How to Get Started with HYROX Training: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you are sold on HYROX and want to know what the actual first steps look like, this is the guide. No long explanation of the sport. Just the practical path from where you are right now to your first HYROX class at CrossFit Trussville.

Step One: Book Your Free Intro

Before your first HYROX class, you sit down with a coach for a private 45-minute session. This is where we learn your fitness background, any injuries or limitations, your goals, and whether you have a race on the calendar. It is free, it is private, and it sets up everything that follows. Do not skip this step. It makes your first class significantly better.

Step Two: Understand What You Are Training For

HYROX class trains the movements, conditioning, and pacing that the sport demands. It is not the race replicated every session. You will build sled strength, rowing capacity, running endurance, wall ball volume, and farmer carry grip. All the pieces that come together on race day. Your coach will tell you which components your current fitness background will build fastest and where you will need more work.

Step Three: Show Up Twice a Week

HYROX classes at CrossFit Trussville run Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00 PM, with additional times being added as the program grows. Twice a week is the minimum effective dose for building HYROX-specific fitness. Show up consistently at that frequency for eight weeks and you will feel a measurable difference in your running capacity, station strength, and ability to sustain output under fatigue.

Step Four: Add a Race to the Calendar When You Are Ready

Racing is never required. But if you want a goal to train toward, a race date gives your training purpose and a timeline. HYROX events run regularly in cities near Birmingham. Nashville, Atlanta, and Charlotte are all within driving distance. Your coach will help you pick a race that fits your timeline and recommend the right division. Most first-time racers enter the Open solo or Doubles division.

What to Expect in Your First Few Classes

Your first HYROX class will be harder than you expect in some places and more manageable than you expect in others. Most people find the sled work humbling early on. The running intervals feel very different under fatigue than they do fresh. The rowing is more technique-dependent than it looks.

None of that is a problem. It is information. Your coach will work through the mechanics with you, adjust loading appropriately, and build your capacity class by class. By week four, the movements that felt foreign will feel like yours.

What You Need to Bring

A training shoe with lateral support works better than a pure running shoe for sled work and station movements. Bring water. Track your loads and times from class one because progress in HYROX is measurable and you want the data. Beyond that, the only thing that matters more than what you do in class is whether you come back. Show up twice a week and everything else follows.
