Nutrition and CrossFit: How to Eat for Performance and Fat Loss

Training is one side of the equation. Nutrition is the other. You can show up to CrossFit Trussville four days a week and work hard every session and still undercut your results completely if you are not fueling and recovering properly. This post covers what that actually looks like in practice.

Sophia Contreras is a registered dietitian and co-owner of CrossFit Trussville. She provides personalized nutrition coaching for CFT members. What follows is the framework she uses: not a meal plan, but the principles that make a difference regardless of your specific goal.

Why Nutrition Matters More Than Most People Think

Research on weight loss and body composition consistently shows that nutrition accounts for roughly 70 to 80 percent of results. Training handles the rest. That ratio shifts when the goal is athletic performance rather than fat loss, but the point holds: you cannot train your way out of a nutrition problem in either direction.

The good news is that CrossFit training and good nutrition have a strong reinforcing relationship. When you train hard and eat to support recovery, you build muscle, reduce fat, increase energy, and sleep better. Each improvement feeds the next. The compounding effect over six to twelve months is significant.

Enough Protein

Protein is the building block of muscle recovery. CrossFit athletes who train three to five days per week typically need significantly more protein than the general population recommendation. The target for most active adults is between 0.7 and 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight per day. If you are not hitting that number consistently, your recovery is compromised regardless of how well you sleep or how good your programming is.

Carbohydrates Around Training

Carbohydrates are your primary fuel source for high-intensity training. Eliminating them entirely is one of the most common mistakes CrossFit beginners make, usually because low-carb diets are marketed as universally beneficial. For people training CrossFit at intensity three or more days per week, adequate carbohydrate intake before and after training directly affects workout quality and recovery speed. The timing and amount depend on your bodyweight, training volume, and goals, which is exactly why individualized coaching matters.

Total Calorie Awareness

You do not need to count every calorie forever. But you do need a working understanding of whether you are eating at, above, or below your maintenance level. Fat loss requires a caloric deficit. Muscle gain requires a surplus. Performance maintenance requires roughly maintenance calories. Most people have never established this baseline with any accuracy, which is why they train hard for months and wonder why the scale is not moving in the direction they expected.

Consistency Over Perfection

The best nutrition plan is the one you can actually follow. An aggressive 1,200-calorie meal plan that produces results for two weeks and then gets abandoned is worse than a moderate, sustainable plan followed for six months. Sophia works with members on plans that account for their real life: social events, travel, family schedules, food preferences. Perfection is not the standard. Consistency is.

What Nutrition Coaching at CrossFit Trussville Looks Like

Sophia provides one-on-one nutrition coaching for CFT members by appointment. This is not a generic plan. It is a personalized approach built around your goals, your training schedule, your food preferences, and your life. Most people come in with one of three goals: fat loss, performance improvement, or general health. The principles overlap but the specific targets differ.

Having your training coach and your registered dietitian under the same roof is an advantage most gyms cannot offer. When training and nutrition are aligned, results happen faster and they last longer. Ask about nutrition coaching when you book your free intro.
