Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions?
We've got answers.

Whether you're just starting out or ready to take the next step — here's everything you need to know about CrossFit Trussville.

  • No. Every workout at CrossFit Trussville is scaled to your current fitness level — not to a standard you haven't reached yet. You start where you are. Your coach builds from there. Most people who've been with us the longest started with zero fitness background.

  • Your first session is a free private intro — not a group class. You sit down with a coach one-on-one, talk through your goals, walk through the facility, and get a feel for the programming before ever joining a class. No commitment, no credit card, no pressure.

From there, your coach recommends the right starting program — usually CrossFit or ReBoot depending on your background — and you join your first class when you're ready.

  • Tell us at your intro. We work around injuries every single day — our coaching staff includes first responders, people with physical therapy backgrounds, and coaches with decades of combined experience helping athletes train safely through limitations.

We also have on-site physical therapy through Resilient Physio Therapy at The PHNX Collective. Your limitations inform how we coach you, they don't disqualify you.

  • That feeling is completely normal and we hear it often. You have real options before joining a group class:

    • Start with ReBoot — smaller class energy, more accessible movements, same great coaches

    • Do a few personal training sessions first to build confidence before joining group classes

    • Talk to a coach at your free intro — they'll tell you honestly what the right starting point looks like for you

Nobody is thrown into the deep end here. The free intro exists specifically so that doesn't happen.

  • No. Many of our longest-tenured members started with zero athletic background. What matters is showing up consistently and being coachable. The fitness comes from there.

  • That depends on your background and your goals — and it's exactly what your free intro is for. As a general guide:

    • CrossFit— if you have some fitness experience or want a more structured, progressive challenge

    • ReBoot— if you're new to the gym, coming back after a long break, or want a coached class without barbell movements

    • Legends— if you're 60 or older and want a program built specifically for your age and goals

    • HYROX— if you're interested in training for or competing in HYROX races

Your coach will give you a clear recommendation after your intro.

  • Every CrossFit and ReBoot class follows the same structure: warmup, skill or strength work, the main workout, and a cooldown. Every minute is accounted for. A coach runs the entire session — there's no part where you're on your own trying to figure out what to do next.

Class length is typically 45 to 60 minutes depending on the program.

  • Yes — class reservations are managed through the Wodify member app. You can book from your phone or desktop. Early morning classes fill quickly, so we recommend booking in advance. Walk-ins are welcome when space is available.

Programs

  • HYROX is a global fitness race that combines 8 x 1km runs with 8 functional workout stations — sled push, sled pull, rowing, skiing, burpee broad jumps, wall balls, sandbag lunges, and farmers carries. Races are held in arenas worldwide and have grown rapidly into one of the most popular fitness competitions in the world.

CFT's HYROX class trains the movements, pacing, and fitness demands of the sport. You don't have to race to join — the class delivers excellent strength and conditioning on its own.

  • No. HYROX classes are open to anyone regardless of whether you plan to race. The class is a great standalone strength and endurance program. If you decide you want to compete after training with us, your coaches will help you pick the right event and division.

  • Yes. CrossFit Trussville is the only gym in Trussville, Alabama offering dedicated HYROX training classes. Classes run Tuesday and Thursday at 6:00pm at 139 Railroad Street.

  • No. HYROX is its own sport with its own movement demands. CrossFit experience helps but isn't required. All fitness levels are welcome — classes are coached and scaled to where you are.

  • HYROX races offer Open (for all levels), Pro (competitive), Doubles (two-person team), and Relay (four-person team) divisions. Age group categories are also available within each division. Your coaches will help you determine the right division when you're ready to race.

  • No. Every membership is month to month. If it's not working, cancel. We operate this way because we're confident enough in what we deliver that we don't need to lock you in. Our average member stays 48 months — not because they have to, but because they keep getting results.

  • Yes. We offer family memberships and discounts for multiple members joining together. For CFT Kids and CFT Youth, we also offer a sibling discount. Reach out to us directly at info@crossfittrussville.com or (205) 317-9234 for specifics.

  • Yes. We offer discounts for students, teachers, active military, veterans, law enforcement, and firefighters. It's our way of saying thank you to the people who show up for others every day — you deserve a place that shows up for you. Reach out to us directly at info@crossfittrussville.com or (205) 317-9234 to get the details and get started.

  • We use Wodify — a workout and membership management app included with your membership. Wodify lets you log workouts and track progress over time, see daily results and leaderboards, book classes, and access your full performance history for lifts, benchmarks, and conditioning scores.

Your coach also tracks your progress in person. Wodify is the data layer. The coaching is the human layer.

Membership

  • Yes. CrossFit Trussville membership may qualify for reimbursement through your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA). This can meaningfully reduce your effective monthly cost — an unlimited membership at $200/month could net to $140–160 after pre-tax reimbursement depending on your tax bracket.

Visit our HSA/FSA page for details on how to submit for reimbursement, or ask a coach at your free intro.

  • Registered dietitian services may qualify for HSA or FSA reimbursement, particularly when related to a chronic condition or medical necessity. Since our nutrition coaching is led by Sophia Contreras, RD — a licensed registered dietitian — it has a stronger case for reimbursement than general wellness coaching. Check with your HSA/FSA administrator for the specifics of your plan, or ask Sophia at your consultation.

  • No. Every day is different. The programming is built on a structured system that develops strength, endurance, mobility, and skill over time — no two sessions are the same. Constantly varied is a core principle of CrossFit, but variety at CFT is purposeful, not random. Every workout fits into a larger progressive plan.

  • CrossFit done with poor coaching and no standards can carry risk. CrossFit at CFT is different. Every rep has standards. Every coach watches form. Every workout is scaled to the individual. We have been coaching safely for 18 years — including athletes coming back from injuries, surgeries, and long layoffs.

The safest workout is one that's coached, scaled appropriately, and progressive. That describes every class we run.

Facility

  • CrossFit Trussville is owned by Andrew and Candace Rape and Sophia and Lee Contreras. Andrew founded the gym in September 2008 at age 21 — dropping out of college one semester from graduation and buying a failing gym with 7 members and $20 left at the six-month mark.

Candace joined full-time in 2015 after leaving her career as a physical therapist assistant. Sophia became a co-owner in 2025 after two years of sacrifice through the fire, the rebuild, and everything in between — not because she asked, but because it was the only acknowledgment proportionate to what she gave.

  • Yes. On May 7, 2023, the building CrossFit Trussville had called home for over a decade caught fire and burned. By 1:30pm, there was nothing left.

At 5:00am the next morning, class was held at Gateway Family Church. For 106 weeks, the community set up and tore down the gym — inside the church sanctuary, every single week — before moving into The PHNX Collective on May 23, 2025. Not one class was missed.

The full story is on our Our Story page.

  • Gateway Family Church opened their sanctuary. The CFT community showed up the very next morning and held class. For 106 weeks — every Friday evening to set up, every Sunday after service to tear down — the gym operated entirely inside the church. They built a bridge across a creek for running, poured a concrete pad with an outdoor rig, and outfitted two 40-foot shipping containers with equipment. The membership never dropped below 70% of pre-fire numbers. New people joined who had heard the story — and some who hadn't.

  • The PHNX Collective is a 13,000 square foot facility at 139 Railroad Street in Trussville, Alabama — designed and built by Andrew Rape during the two years the gym was operating out of the church. It is now home to CrossFit Trussville, The Dojang Martial Arts, Ironclad Wrestling, Lionspride Jiu-Jitsu, Resilient Physio Therapy, and HRZN Media. The name is a direct reference to CrossFit Trussville's story — the fire and the rebuild.

  • CrossFit Trussville opened in September 2008 — making it one of the longest-running CrossFit affiliates in Alabama and one of the longest-standing in the country. 18 years of continuous operation, through a pandemic, a fire, and a full facility rebuild.
