August Athlete of the Month: Lexi McCoun
Our August Athlete of the Month trains at 5 AM, sometimes coming straight off a hospital night shift. She got her first pull-ups in the Open this year. And she just finished internal medicine residency at UAB. Congratulations to Lexi McCoun, and here is her story in her own words.
Why Did Lexi Choose CrossFit Trussville?
"I started training at CrossFit Trussville in February 2025 because my husband and I were looking for a place where we could train together, but that would challenge both of us to reach our individual fitness goals. We found exactly that at CFT with the mix of CrossFit and ReBoot programming. Along the way we also found an amazing, encouraging community that makes showing up at 5 AM, after a night shift at the hospital, or Saturday mornings something I look forward to all week long. All of the coaches and athletes have been so supportive and I am so grateful to be a part of this community!"
Lexi's starting point is one we hear all the time: two people, different fitness levels, different goals, looking for one gym that works for both. That is exactly what the combination of CrossFit and ReBoot is built for. Couples train at the same place, at the same time, each in the program that fits where they are.
From Runner to First Pull-Ups
"I have always loved running, but have never felt particularly confident lifting weights. I wanted to get better at that and overall feel stronger. Since starting at CFT, the coaches have challenged me to lift heavier weight than I ever could have before and I got my first pull-ups in the Open this year!"
Lexi McCoun, August Athlete of the Month
Six months from joining to first pull-ups is worth pausing on. Lexi came in as a runner with a strong engine and low confidence with a barbell. That combination is common, especially among women who grew up in endurance sports. What changed was coaching. Coaches who progressively loaded her lifts past what she thought she could handle, and programming that built pulling strength week over week until the pull-up showed up right when it mattered, in the Open.
If you have ever said "I love cardio but I am not a lifter," Lexi is what six months of coached strength work does to that sentence.
Life Outside the Gym
Lexi just finished internal medicine residency at UAB, which makes the 5 AM classes after night shifts even more impressive. She and her husband spend their free time visiting family and getting outdoors: hiking, mountain biking, or grilling on the back porch.
Anyone who has been through residency knows the hours it demands. Lexi built a training habit through the hardest professional stretch of her life, which tells you everything about how she approaches the things she commits to.
What Lexi's Story Proves
You do not need a flexible schedule, prior lifting experience, or perfect conditions to get stronger. You need a gym that fits your real life, coaches who push you past your own assumptions, and a community that makes the early alarm worth it. Lexi found all three, and the results followed.
Congratulations, Lexi. We are so proud of you, and we cannot wait to see what the next year at CFT looks like.
