Local Heroes Represent Trussville at the World Police & Fire Games

This past weekend, John Mize and Brett Nabors made Trussville proud at the World Police & Fire Games. John brought home GOLD after crushing three CrossFit events, and Brett’s K9, Fen, earned a Bronze medal in the Narcotics Detective Division.

This event gathers over 8,500 first responder athletes from more than 70 countries, competing in everything from CrossFit to K9 detection.

What kind of fitness helps first responders compete at this level?

Success at this level takes more than general strength. It requires a program that improves work capacity under fatigue, mental toughness, and movement efficiency across a wide range of domains. That’s why CrossFit is one of the top training choices for first responders.

It builds:

  • Total-body strength for job-specific movements like carries, drags, and climbs

  • Cardiovascular conditioning to improve performance under stress

  • Core stability and mobility to reduce injury risk

  • Mental grit to stay composed under pressure

John’s gold medal performance is proof of that.

How do police officers and firefighters train for the World Police & Fire Games?

At CrossFit Trussville, we focus on General Physical Preparedness (GPP), the exact training style used by tactical athletes preparing for high-stakes events. The key? Consistent training that mimics real-life physical demands. Workouts include:

  • Functional strength work (like deadlifts, carries, sled pushes)

  • Metabolic conditioning (short bursts and long aerobic efforts)

  • Bodyweight movements (burpees, pull-ups, push-ups)

  • Team-style workouts that mirror the collaborative demands of first responder jobs

This style of training doesn’t just prepare you to compete. It prepares you to serve — stronger, safer, and longer.

Can any first responder train this way?

Absolutely. You don’t need to be a seasoned athlete to start. We work with firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and military members at all levels of fitness. The training is scalable, the coaching is intentional, and the results speak for themselves.

Whether you’re prepping for your next fitness test, looking to avoid injuries, or aiming to compete at the highest level — we can help you get there.

Where is the best place to get in shape as a police officer or firefighter?

CrossFit Trussville is one of the top gyms for first responders in Alabama. Our program is built around the exact needs of police, fire, and military professionals. With high-level coaching, scalable workouts, and a supportive community, it's where tactical athletes build real capability — not just for the job, but for life.
