Our Legends ladies just keep crushing it.
Today's exercise in our Legends program was the tempo deadlift, with weight climbing as the reps came down. Our ladies showed up! Ann, Tracy, and Callie each lifted the golden kettlebell, all 100 pounds of it, for 4 controlled reps. Nancy pulled 44 pounds and Sue pulled 35, and every one of those numbers represents the same thing: strength earned with patience and control.
What Is a Tempo Deadlift?
A tempo deadlift is a deadlift performed slowly and deliberately, with the lowering phase under strict control instead of dropping or rushing the weight. The slower pace removes momentum from the lift, which means the muscles of the back, hips, and legs do all of the work through the entire range of motion. It is one of the safest and most effective ways to build pulling strength at any age.
Why Do Deadlifts Matter After 60?
This exercise is important because it protects and strengthens the back safely, with control. The deadlift is the gym version of the single most common real-world movement there is: picking something up off the ground. Groceries, grandkids, a laundry basket, a bag of mulch. Training that pattern with progressive weight keeps the back, hips, and grip strong enough to handle life without fear of injury.
That is what this is really about: overall independence as we age. The research is consistent on this point. Strength training is the most effective tool available for maintaining muscle mass, protecting bone density, and preserving the physical independence that makes everything else in life possible. Nancy's 44 pounds and Sue's 35 pounds are building the exact same future as the golden kettlebell. The weight is scaled to the athlete. The benefit is not.
Three women over 60 pulled 100 pounds off the floor today, four times each, with perfect control. If you think strength has an age limit, our Legends ladies would like a word.
What Is the Legends Program?
Legends is CrossFit Trussville's dedicated strength and fitness program for adults 60 and older. Classes meet Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, run 45 minutes, and are coached every minute with two scaling tiers so every athlete trains at the right level. The focus is longevity: strength, balance, mobility, and the conditioning that keeps you doing the things you love. We are so proud of this group, and they inspire everyone in this gym every single week.
