How We Rebuilt CrossFit Trussville: The Story Behind The PHNX Collective
This is not a story about a gym. It is a story about a community that refused to stop. The fire, the 106 weeks in a church, and the rebuild that became something better than what we had before.
September 2008: Day One
CrossFit Trussville opens its doors in Trussville, Alabama. The mission is the same one that drives everything today: coach people well, build a community worth belonging to, and produce results that change lives. What starts as a small affiliate grows year by year into one of the most recognized gyms in the area.
May 7, 2023: The Fire
CrossFit Trussville burns. The building is lost. Fifteen years of equipment, programming, and community memories gone in a single night. For most gyms, this is the end of the story. For CrossFit Trussville, it is the beginning of the next chapter.
May 2023 to 2025: 106 Weeks in a Church
CrossFit Trussville does not close. Within days of the fire, the community finds a home at a local church and keeps training. For 106 weeks, members show up to an unconventional space and do what CrossFit Trussville members have always done: work hard, support each other, and come back tomorrow.
This period tests the community and reveals exactly what it is made of. Members who had every reason to find somewhere else, somewhere closer, newer, or more convenient, stayed. They drove further, trained in less comfortable conditions, and kept showing up because CrossFit Trussville was their community, not just their gym.
May 23, 2025: The PHNX Collective Opens
CrossFit Trussville reopens at 139 Railroad Street inside The PHNX Collective: a facility built not just to replace what was lost, but to exceed it. New equipment. New programs. HYROX added. More coaching staff. More class times. The same community that kept training in a church for two years is now training in the best facility CrossFit Trussville has ever had.
2025: Best Gym in Trussville
CrossFit Trussville is named Best Gym in Trussville 2025. The recognition is meaningful not because of the award itself, but because of what it represents: a community that chose to rebuild, a coaching staff that never stopped showing up, and a gym that is stronger now than it was before the fire.
What the Rebuild Taught Us
Two years in a church confirmed something we already believed but had not been tested on at that scale: the gym is the people, not the building. That loyalty shaped every decision in the rebuild. The facility those members trained in for two years of improvised sessions deserved something exceptional. We built it.
The fire took the building. It could not touch what actually made this place work.
What CrossFit Trussville Is Today
CrossFit Trussville today is a full coaching facility with six programs: CrossFit, HYROX, ReBoot boot camp, Legends for adults 60 and older, CFT Kids, nutrition coaching with registered dietitian Sophia Contreras, and personal training. Sixteen coaches. Every class coached. Located at 139 Railroad Street inside The PHNX Collective in Trussville, Alabama.
We have been here since September 2008. We have developed CrossFit Games athletes, Regionals competitors, GRID League players, Ironman triathletes, and marathon runners. We have also coached people who walked in unable to complete a push-up and changed their health entirely. Every one of those stories happened because someone decided to start.
